Twitter as a social network platform has its unique ways of engaging users across various networks. As such, the terms associated with actions taken on Twitter may be quite different from the usual vocabulary. We will briefly discuss some of those terms in this article; we hope you find this helpful.

Some commonly used Twitter terms and their meaning

  1. @mention: When you place the @ symbol before any username, you automatically tag that user in your tweet.
  2. @reply: When you start a tweet with @username, you can publicly reply that single user’s tweet.
  3. Direct message (DM): With this command, a private message can be sent directly to a Twitter user who is currently following you.
  4. Follower: A twitter follower is a person who follows you on Twitter and gets your updates and tweets on his timeline (the stream of tweets from people you already follow that displays on your home feed).
  5. Retweet: Retweeting is a way of sharing another person’s tweet through your account.
  6. Hashtags: By placing the # symbol before any word automatically turns that word to a tag of your tweets. When the tag is clicked, one can see your tweet as well as other people’s tweet with that same word tag.
  7. Link shorteners: This is used when you have a URL to promote on Twitter. With the default 140 characters for twitter tweets, it is almost impossible to attach a long URL and still post a relevant tweet with such few word counts. So you make use of URL shorteners to reduce the links from 16 to about 20 characters.

  1. Lists: The lists function on Twitter allows users to organize people who follow them, or they follow in a group or list. Lists make it possible not to follow a person back but still keep up with the person’s records and updates. You can also group subjects and topics into lists, group your favorite discussions and Twitter users all in one list.

Here are some useful tips on how to run your account:
